The Market Square
Around the Square, lies the main shopping centre.
The most important street is perhaps Allardice Street, the main street to the north. Opposite the Market Buildings, stand the Royal Hotel, built in 1827, and the Italianate Town Hall, built in 1878 by voluntary subscription at a cost of £4,000 and more.
In the Upper Town Hall is a fine collection of etchings and a portrait of Field-marshal Keith by Allan Ramsay (a son of the poet), presented by Major Fraser of Tornaveen in 1901. It shows the Field marshal, his face full of character, wearing a breastplate and carrying a field-marshal's baton. A camp, a brook and a house are shown in the background. This famous soldier was the brother of the 10th and last Earl Marischal who, after the Keith estates had been forfeited to the Crown in 1718 and Dunnottar dismantled, fought in Spain, then went to Prussia where for many years he was the intimate friend and companion of Frederick the Great.
