Bogwell Lane
Under the street name, a dilapidated concrete structure, inscribed Bogwell 1910, is all that remains of the old Bogwell, now derelict, which used to be the principal water supply for the Old Town.
Once it was an inexhaustible spring of pure water which gushed out of the Bervie Braes at the back of the County Buildings and which, before the erection of the old prison at the end of the 18th century, made the lower ground a bog. The Bogwell was famous for its hard water neighbourhood, we were informed in 1897, by the spring rising in a trap dyke in which masses of lime crystals occur.

Seven years later , additions were made to the original well. The Managers of Stonehaven decided that it stood much in need of a fountain and cistern of stone to gather and keep the water clean for the use and benefit of the town. On May 15th of that year, a voluntary contribution was called for throughout the Town, to pay for them. In 1910 the water was conveyed by pipeline to the outflow, now completely dry, fixed to the rear of the Police Station as it is today.
