NEW DEVELOPMENTS PLANNED FOR STONEHAVEN
Bancon Developments are seeking outline planning permission for a 45,000sq ft supermarket store and parking for 400 cars on land of the A92, close to the junction with the A90, at East Newtonleys, on the southern edge of Stonehaven.

Bancon has already applied for permission to develop a business park on land immediately adjacent to the East Newtonleys site and this may soon become a reality. They were granted ouline permission in 1997 and are now seeking final approval and this will be considered by the Kincardine and Mearns area committee in February 2005.

Eight office units and eleven general and industrial units are proposed.

Parking for 670 cars and 55 lorries would be provided.

Tha applicant expects the £15 million development would provide 2,000 new employment opportunities for Stonehaven.

However three letters of objection have been received by the local authority, including one from Stonehaven Community Council, who fear that this development would have a dreadful impact on Stonehaven's skyline and landscape.
They are asking for trees and shrubs to be planted promptly before the work starts so they provide effective screening as soon as possible.

If both developments go ahead this will have a significant impact on the southern boundary of the town.

There has been a demand for a supermarket development in Stonehaven.

In 2004 Edinburgh based Balahaven lodged plans for a similar development close to Fetteresso Cemetery and this is still to be determined although there are local fears of the suitability of the Fetteresso site.

The retail giant Tesco has long favoured a development in the centre of Stonehaven having purchased the site of the old Commodore Hotel near the Recreation Grounds. Thet had hoped to take over the Recreation Grounds but locals stood against this plan.

Tesco are now trying to sell the old Commodore Hotel site.
