CHRISTMAS CHEER FOR LOCAL ORGANISATIONS
Stonehaven Business Association are to receive from Aberdeenshire Council a grant of £1500 towards the town's Christmas Lights and £500 towards setting up a Farmers Market in the town.
Stonehaven Community Council also received a grant of of £500 for the recently formed Fossil Group to set up displays based on the millipede found at Cowie in January 2004. Read more about this here
The cash will come from the town's Common Good Fund and the Council's Top-up Budget.

CONGRATULATIONS TO STONEHAVEN SEA CADETS
The Sea Cadets were awarded the 2004 Stephenson Trophy as the best Sea Cadet Unit in the Northern Area ( Scotland, Northern Ireland and North England.
A deserving and fitting accolade for unit's 50th Anniversary year.

NEW POOL IDEA
New Office bearers were elected at the AGM of the Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Pool at the County Hotel on 7th December2004.
Newly elected Chairman, Mary Mitchell aims for the group to secure funding to build a Paddling Pool.

STONEHAVEN IT'S SPECIAL
A new Tourism Group for Stonehaven has been set up by the Stonehaven It's Special Organisation to help market the town.
Most sections of the community are represented and George McGillivray, Webecom Marketing has been appointed Chairman of the new group.
Anyone with ideas to help promote tourism in the area are invited to contact George by emailing

STONEHAVEN LOSS
Stonehaven has lost a prominent member of the local community.
Freddie Stephen a journalist and owner of the town's famous confectioners Giulianotti's passed away on Wednesday 15th September 2004 just a few days after his 79th birthday.
Born and raised in the town he was educated at Mackie Academy and Robert Gordon's College. He developed a great passion for journalism and was well liked and well known through his work for the Mearns Leader. He was very community minded and always willing to promote Stonehaven. He was joint founder of the RW Thomson Memorial Fellowship.
His funeral takes place at St James Episcopal Church on Thursday 23rd September at 12noon.


STONEHAVEN OPEN AIR POOL NEWS
Stonehaven Open Air Pool's annual survey has once again highlighted the importance of this facility to the town.
It is reported that six out of ten people were attracted to the poll by the promise of what is claimed to be the UK's only art-deco Olympic size, filtrated sea-water, open air swimming pool read more

Stonehaven Business Association held another successful Networking evening at the headquarters of the Maritime Rescue Institute (MRI) on Monday 6th September 2004.

Stonehaven... It's Special is the local community in partnership.Local groups along with Aberdeenshire Council work together to promote the town of Stonehaven for the benefit of locals and tourist alike.
The Events Group is made up of the voluntary organising clubs / groups of the towns community events, who have have come together to support each other including the joint marketing of events.

NEW LOOK FOR TOWN HALL,

The second phase of restoration works will complete the facelift of Stonehaven Town Hall.The first phase resulted in a considerable improvement but lack of funds prevented the local authority from tackling the top facade but now plans have been submitted to complete the task over the summer months of 2004.

EXPANSION PLANS FOR LEWIS CRASSIC GIBBON CENTRE
This not-for-profit centre dedicated to the world renowned Scottish Author. Lewis Crassic Gibbon, draws literary buffs from all over the world.
As its 11th season comes to a close on 26th October 2003 the trustees are hopeful that next year will see an expansion of this popular venue.
Art exhibitions, performance art and other events have kept the centre's popularity high, as well as the coffee shop with home baking.
Its Under The Influence art exhibition in July this year, attracted 1,350 visitors and sold £2400 worth of local art.
Ms Williamson who runs the Centre is confident they could fill a bigger exhibition space and believes any expansion would be good for the local economy.
Over the winter months they will be looking closely at what grants are available.
The Centre is expected to open again in time for Easter next year.

FUND RAISING FOR OPEN AIR POOL
Stonehaven man Douglas Samways who is chairman of Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Pool was among thousands of serious athletes and fun runners taking part in the Great North Run on Sunday 21st September 2003.
This was his way of raising funds to go towards putting a retractable roof over the famous heated outdoor pool which has enjoyed a very busy summer.
Mr Samways, a teacher at Inverurie Academy was pleased with his effort, completing the 13.1 mile run in 1 hour and 44 minutes.

Stonehaven Residents now have a choice of Broadband Services from Hydro Electric and British Telecom
Scottish Enterprise are offering financial assistance to businesses,with the installation of these fast internet services More information is available from their website.

15TH STONEHAVEN FOLK FESTIVAL 2003
Stonehaven's Annual Folk Festival has been voted a great success.The event attracted visitors from all over the world including many musicians wanting to take part in Jamming Sessions. The unique events, The Aqua Ceilidh and World Paper and Comb Championship attracted big crowds and most concerts were a sell out, which delighted the Organisers.

STONEHAVEN GOES LIVE AS FIRST OF TOWN'S BROADBAND CUSTOMERS PLUGS IN

Four residents of a Stonehaven street have become the first in the UK to take part in the commercial trial of a new broadband internet connection delivered not over telephone wires but across the electricity network.

Neighbours Maurice and Morag Coull, and David and Jennifer Macdonald, all from the town's Evan Street, are now on the receiving end of super-fast internet access following enabling of the first electricity sub-station providing the service.

Aberdeen Towns Partnership
The Aberdeenshire Towns Partnership is working to secure the integrated sustainable development
of Aberdeenshire's main towns.
The Partnership was launched in March 1998 and is currently taking action in five key towns in
Aberdeenshire: Ellon, Peterhead, Stonehaven, Inverurie, and Fraserburgh.
The Annual Seminar was held on Friday 27th June at the St Leonards Hotel, Stonehaven.
Delegates from all the towns involved attended the all day seminar and the various workshops
proved very beneficial to all who attended.
Delegates were also treated to a tour of Stonehaven highlighting the main business development areas, Spurryhillock Industrial Estate, Arduthie Motors Site and the proposed development at East Newtonleys.
Other groups were taken to the famous Carron Restaurant, Market Square and the Harbour.
Co-ordinator Nick Brown was delighted with the feedback from the seminar and had received lots of food for thought on how to continue
the good work in maintaining sustainable development of the five main towns.

R.W.Thomson Rally
The Annual Event to commemorate the founder of the pneumatic tyre
was held in Stonehaven on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June.
This year's event attracted more than 100 entries including classic and vintage cars, motorbikes,buses and even a green goddess.
Baird Park was the venue on Saturday for a preview of the vehicles.
Stonehaven Pipe Band performed over the weekend.
The Market Square was closed on the Sunday as all the entries were on display here.

CHARITY AUCTION
Local Charity, Cornerstone Community Care, were delighted with the £950 raised at a recent
charity auction in The Station Hotel, Stonehaven.
Adults with learning disabilities and other special needs are to benefit from the money raised.
Cornerstone are holding their 21st Anniversary Celebrations at Haddo House on June 28th.

Broadband Demo
Stonehaven Business Association organised a Broadband Demonstration in conjunction with Hydro
Electric at the Council Chambers on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th June. A spokesman for Hydro
Electric said they were delighted with the response as around 400 people visited over the two days to try out the service live. The general reaction from the users was that the internet
access was much faster than expected. The fact that the modem could be plugged into an electric
socket anywhere in the home or office was also very appealing.
Some areas will be able to have access within the next four weeks and those in areas covered by Phase 2 of the development should have access by the end of the summer.

NEW HEADQUARTERS FOR SEA CADETS
Stonehaven Sea Cadets have unveiled plans for their new £350,000 headquarters near the Harbour.
Their existing building TS Carron is 160 years old and isn't watertight anymore.A sub-committee
has been set up to raise funds. Anyone wishing to help should call 01569 762918.

ENTREPRENEURS FROM THE MEARNS
A Business networking and support group is welcoming new members from the Mearns.
Aberdeen Entrepreneurs has been holding informal meetings since 1966.
They are now extending the membership to other areas.
New members may be students, new starts, seni-retired business owners or employees.

J LO - STONEHAVEN BOOST
On Monday 28th April it was reported in Aberdeen's Press & Journal that Hollywood
superstar,Jennifer Lopez has revealed a taste for a particularly Scottish delicacy - the
deep fried Mars Bar.
Stonehaven's Carron Fish Bar is the birthplace of
this snack which became an international fad in the 90's and Jennifer Lopez devoured one during a recent TV show.
Calum Richardson, who runs the Carron Fish Bar said he would be delighted to welcome her to his
shop for a supper.
Could he be so lucky.
